Join us for the 7th Annual JY Joyner 5K Run/Walk on March 4, 2018 at 2pm!
JY Joyner Elementary School’s 5K Run/Walk aims to teach kids about the benefits of making healthy lifestyle choices –- and raises money to fund annual programs for our 700+ student body. Over the past five years, more than 3,500 race participants have helped fund character education, Battle of the Books, campus beautification, Science Go Round, First in Fitness, technology updates, upgrading multi-media equipment…and so much more.
The 2018 event will be held on Sunday, March 4. Event details listed below:
- Pre-Race Packet Pick-Up and Onsite Registration
When: Saturday, March 3, 1-4 p.m.
Where: Omega Sports – North Hills (near Ben & Jerry’s and movie theater)
Pre-race packet pick-up will begin promptly at 1 p.m., not before. You can only pick up race packets for your family – no exceptions. We have ordered a limited number of extra t-shirts for families who missed the t-shirt deadline. These shirts are first come, first served. We are unable to exchange shirt sizes. Onsite registration will accept cash or check only.
- Race Day Packet Pickup
When: Sunday, March 4, 12:30-1:45 p.m.
Where: Parking lot at the top of the carpool loop
You may only pick up race packets for your family. We are unable to exchange shirt sizes. There will also be a short window for race day registration. Cash or check only.
- Race Day Activities
12:30 p.m. – Race day registration and packet pickup begin. Cash or check only.
1:00-3:30 p.m. – Race day activities open (photo booth, sidewalk chalk, football station, Locopops food truck)
1:30 p.m. – Kid warm-up by race sponsor 12th State CrossFit
1:45 p.m. – JYJ Gold Choir and race announcements
2:00 p.m. – Race starts!
3:30 p.m. – Event ends
- There are no restrooms available along the race route. The 2nd grade trailer will be open for use of restroom facilities.
- We do not allow scooters on the course. Strollers and wheelchairs are allowed.
- Water will be available along the route for race participants. There will also be water and fruit available for participants as they cross the finish line.
- Remind your children to make sure they step on the timing mat at the course tournaround point. If they don’t step on the mat they will not be timed. There will be a volunteer there to help.
- Noble Road will be closed from the corner of Lowden Street, intersection of McNeill, all the way to the Greenway. There will be no parking available in either of the school parking lots. Please respect all our neighbors!
The 5K Run/Walk is the grand finale event of our month-long Healthy Choice Marathon (HCM), which celebrates healthy minds and bodies by encouraging students to read, eat well and exercise daily. Not only do we urge kids to make healthy decisions, but we help them prepare for the 5K Run/Walk by hosting a 4-week afterschool Running Club for all students (see below).
This is our annual PTA fundraiser! Our goal in 2018 is to raise $20,000, 100% of which goes directly to the PTA to fund existing student programs. Our efforts in past years have helped fund student character education programs, Battle of the Books, a new campus soccer field, Science Go Round, First in Fitness, coding and robot education, technology updates, upgrading multi-media equipment…and so much more. This year we are also focusing on replacing the existing (and often unusable) campus water fountains with new bottle filling stations.
While 5K Run/Walk registration proceeds cover the cost of the race, that is not the primary source of income for this fundraiser – that income comes exclusively from sponsorships and Classroom Challenge dollars. Sponsorships starts at $250 and go up to our Presenting Sponsor level of $3,000, with several levels in between.

The Classroom Challenge is over and we had some serious competition going on. The PTA thanks you all for your contributions. These funds will allow us to install “touchless” water bottle filling stations on campus!

Our overall class winner is Mrs. Millsaps’ class! They brought in the most money and win a Defy Gravity jump party AND they get to line up FIRST at the 5K.
To help Joyner students be ACTIVE and have FUN as we MOVE to get ready for the 5K, Joyner PTA offers a free Running Club during the Healthy Choice Marathon. The club will meet four Thursdays from Feb. 8 – March 1, 2018, from 3-4 p.m. Registration info will be posted on Memberhub by the end of January.
