NewsFlash | No School Today but School Meals Available, Teacher Rally, and Night of Nonsense on Thursday

No School Today

All Wake County schools will be closed today, May 16, due to a teachers’ rally in Raleigh. Click here for more information, and see below for school meal options for today and how to join in the rally. We shared some childcare options in last week’s NewsFlash. This WRAL article outlines some additional options.

 

JYJ Students Can Get a School Meal Today

Child Nutrition Services will provide meals for students at 34 schools across Wake County today. Meals will be served from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Students will be able to eat their meals in the school dining room. Meal options will include a turkey combo deli sandwich, or alternately a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, a fruit cup, 100 percent fruit juice and milk.

In addition, JYJ’s Backpack Buddies team has provided those members of our JYJ family who normally take backpacks of food home on the weekends with extra food in preparation for school being closed today.

 

Resolution in Support of Educators

The executive boards of the Joyner PTA and the JYJoyner Foundation have formally adopted a resolution in support of educators on May 16. You can find the document here.

Students and parents are welcome to participate in the March for Students and Rally for Respect being held today. The March for Students begins at 10:30 a.m. at NCAE headquarters; the Rally for Respect starts at 3:30. Wear red. Click here or here for more details.

 

Summer Camp Opportunities

Ms. Cameron, Mr. Fotta and Mr. Poyer’s camps are open to ANY rising kindergartners through 5th grade and run from 9-noon and 1-4 pm. Supervised before care (8-9am), lunch (12-1pm) and after care (4-5pm) included at no extra cost. Camp dates are July 23-27, July 30-Aug 3 and Aug 6-10. To download registration form, click here.

Ms. Johnson and Ms. Forbes are offering half-day kindergarten readiness camps June 25-29, July 23-27, and Aug 6-10 for rising Kinders. July 30-Aug. 3 is First Grade Refresher week. Click here to learn more and click here to download the registration form.

 

Night of Nonsense & Food Truck Frenzy – What You Need To Know! 

When: TomorrowThursday, May 17
 
Weather: Rain or Shine! Cafeteria and overhang are available for shelter if a stray shower decides to join us. Stay tuned to the facebook event page HERE for updates or changes.
 
Time:
4:45 – 8:00:  Food Truck Frenzy
6:00 – 8:00:  Nonsense Show is ALWAYS FREE & ALWAYS FUN! This is a hilarious live show, performed by your very own Joyner Teachers & Staff. Yes, you get to laugh AT your teachers! 
 
Where: Food Trucks in the carpool lane/loop, seating in the cafeteria, show under the overhang next to the carpool loop.
 
TRUCKS :
Many are offering gluten free, vegan & vegetarian options as well as some kids meals.
 
Parking/Bring:
Parking is limited, so please walk or carpool if you can. Bring money for food trucks and a picnic blanket if you’d like to eat outside.
 

Quiet Room Volunteers & Supplies NEEDED!

For the second year, Joyner will provide a “Quiet Room” at Night of Nonsense for anyone who needs to step out of the fun for a few minutes. If you can volunteer to supervise the quiet room for part of the evening or let us borrow some supplies (bean bag chair, books, music player, coloring supplies, sensory toys, etc.) please sign up here. Kindergarten Orientation Next Thursday

Rising kindergarteners and their parents are invited to join us for an informative meeting next Thursday, May 24, from 8:40-9:45 am in the JYJ gym. This is your child’s chance to get a feel for what kindergarten will be like and a chance for parents to learn more about kindergarten at JYJ.

Lunch and Learn: What Every Parent Needs to Know About…

… Starting Kindergarten!
