How to Help Greensboro Elementary Schools after Sunday’s Tornado

Three Greensboro elementary schools were significantly damaged in the tornado on Sunday. The children from those three schools are being relocated to three other schools for the remainder of the year, which means there is a lot of uncertainty and need right now at school and at their homes.

Here is information on how to donate to help with the tornado relief, if you would like to:

  • Donations of bottles of water, nonperishable food items, and personal hygiene items are being collected at the Interactive Resource Center at 407 E Washington St in Raleigh.
  • Monetary donations can be made to The Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro. Make your contribution designated to GCS tornado fund. Phone: 336-379-9100 or online donations can be made at: https://cfgreatergreensboro.squarespace.com/blog/2018/4/16/east-greensboro-tornado-relief
  • If you want to volunteer personally to remove debris and other opportunities, call the Volunteer Center at 336-373-1633.
  • Donations for the school are being collected. Joyner teacher Ms. Beller will be taking supplies to Greensboro this weekend, so you can drop off items at the school office for her by Friday.
    • Most needed supplies: 24 pack crayons, construction paper, markers, 12 pack colored pencils, wide-rule loose-leafed paper, #2 pencils, and spiral notebooks.
    • Children’s books for K-5 classrooms

Wake County Public Schools Budget Update and Opportunity for Parent Input

Wake County Public School’s 2018-2019 proposed budget called for an increase of $58.9 million in local funding, $48 million of which would maintain the current level of instruction and support.

The proposal also includes $11 million in improved services, including to increase the number of school counselors, social workers and psychologists as well as services for the Academically and Intellectually Gifted. Visit www.wcpss.net/budget to learn more.

The Board of Education held a public hearing on the budget proposal yesterday, so parents wishing to comment on the budget should contact their school board member as soon as possible. Once the Board of Education approves changes to the proposed budget, it will send its request to the Wake County Commissioners before May 15. State law requires County Commissioners make the final decision by June 30 on all budget requests involving local funding. More than a quarter of the school system’s budget is paid for with local funding.

The JYJ PTA thanks all our volunteers who made this a great event for JYJ students, families, teachers and friends. We’ve had lots of positive comments, and we appreciate your role in making it a fun experience for everyone!

We did end up with extra t-shirts in all sizes (Youth Small-Adult XXL) except Adult Small. T-shirts are $5 each. Place your order by emailing Arinn Widmayer at arinnwidmayer@gmail.com.

The 5K could not happen without the support of our sponsors and friends. Their contributions are so important to our school. Thank you!

Congratulations to Joyner Odyssey of the Mind Teams

In the regional competition last Saturday, our Division 1 teams brought home 3rd, 5th and 7th place finishes for their respective problems! Each team competed in crowded fields and finished in the highest-performing group of elementary schools for each problem.
Although the Primary Division doesn’t score teams for their problem-solving, the JYJ Primary team was fantastic at their event on Feb. 17.
Special thanks to our OM co-chairs, Andrew Jones and Jenny Harper, our parent volunteers who helped at the tournament, and our volunteer coaches. OM coaches spend anywhere from 50 to 100 hours from November to March working with their teams. It’s a huge (and very rewarding!) volunteer commitment, and there would be no program for our kids without these parent coaches.
Division 1, Problem 4 – Animal House
Coaches: Jeff Pare, Emily Plumb, and Ryan Ball
Students: Holden Ball, Sergio Becom, Caleb Bullock, Jane Fitzpatrick, Ainsley Hernandez, Tori Pare, Brooke Reynard

Division 1, Problem 3 – Mockumentary! Seriously?
Coaches: Andrew Jones and Will Roberts
Students: Sofia Brinkley, Bowen Caba, Claire Fullam, Jackie Jones, Finn Roberts, Kailyn Robison, Olivia Robison
Division 1, Problem 5 – A Stellar Hangout
Coaches: Amy Circosta and Sue Mann

Students: Sam Circosta, Ryder Cloninger, Arlie Harper, Avery Mann, Rachel Percenti, Noah Swindell, Quincy Swindell

Primary Team – We’re Cooking Now
Coaches: Carroll Vuncannon and Katie Catlin

Students: Nova Alexander-Smith, Marcus Cadet, Savannah Catlin, Leah Circosta, Sam Harper, McLain Jones, Louella Vuncannon

NewsFlash | Classroom Challenge, Principal’s Coffee Thursday and Yearbook Orders

Looking for resources about how to talk about last week’s tragedy with your children? Check out these suggestions from the National Association of School Psychologists.

Support Joyner through 5K and Classroom Challenge!

Remember the JYJ 5K and the Classroom Challenge are our spring fundraisers! The PTA uses the money we bring in from these events in two ways:

1. To fund existing programs like Science Go Round, classroom Promethean boards, Writers in Residence, Backpack Buddies, and more that are annually budgeted, and

2. To pay for a facility improvement project on campus.

This year that facility improvement is to install touchless water bottle filling stations on campus! These new stations fall right in line with the 5K’s platform of encouraging kids to make healthy choices every day. Bottle fillers not only promote drinking water, limit the spread of germs and reduce our green footprint, but they also improve learning conditions for students and working conditions for staff.

Donate to your child’s class for the Classroom Challenge by having them bring in change, bills (or checks!) to their teacher or you can give online here. The class that brings in the most money wins a jump party at Defy Gravity generously donated by our awesome friends at HTR Capital Group Real Estate! The Challenge ends on Monday, Feb. 26.

Interested in sponsoring the 5K? Please click here for more info. Contact Arinn Widmayer at arinnwidmayer@gmail.com with questions.

Come to the Principal’s Coffee Tomorrow

Anxiety among adolescents has risen in recent years, but there are things parents can do to help. Join us in the media center to discuss ways to support your child when nervousness and anxiety may arise in a school setting. PTA will provide coffee and no RSVP needed.

NCGA Passes Changes to Class Size Legislation

The NC General Assembly passed a class size reduction compromise last week. The new plan phases in the new class size requirements over several years, adds funding for program enhancement teachers (arts, music, world language, and physical education), and adds funding for more pre-kindergarten classes. This compromise still leaves challenges, as local school districts like Wake County still must find ways to accommodate the hundreds of new classrooms that will be needed by the time the class size limits will take effect in 2021.

The school board has already voted to “cap” enrollment at a dozen elementary schools for this school year, and 15 schools next year. Families can expect that number to grow in future years. Other choices may include reassigning transfer, magnet, and calendar-choice students back to their base schools, capping enrollment at more schools, and making specific changes to assignment zones. Click here to read more from WakeEd Partnership.

Did you know?

  • Students nationwide are about 70 times more likely to get to school safely if they take the school bus instead of traveling by car, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
