JYJ Girls On The Run Needs Coaches in 2018-19

Joyner is hoping to host a Girls on the Run (GOTR) team in the Fall of 2018 and Spring of 2019, but we need your help! We must secure at least two — preferably three — volunteer coaches. Coaches participate in a one-day training this summer and running experience is NOT required. Moms, teachers, big sisters, aunts, baby sitters, and family friends (ages 18+) are all welcome to apply! Girls on the Run is a wonderful leadership, fitness and character development program for rising 3rd – 5th grade girls. Practices would be Tuesday and Thursday outside of Joyner for 90 minutes right after school from Sept. 25 – Dec. 3. Click here for more info. Please help spread the word that we need coaches on social media. Stay tuned for registration details for the girls. Contact Shanna Schroeder with any questions or if you are interested in coaching: shannas@us.ibm.com.

You’ll pull it together, format it in MemberHub, and schedule it ahead of time to go out early Wednesday morning – no need to set that early alarm. If you think you might be interested, please reply to this email, and we can talk more.

Congratulations to our PTA Award Winners

North Carolina PTA Teacher of the Year (1-3 years): Fran Cameron

Winner of the statewide ”Champion for Children” award, Ms. Cameron has been at Joyner Elementary for 18 years, but this school year is her first as a classroom teacher. Her dedication and passion for teaching has been such an example for our community as she nurtured and paid attention to every detail as a Teacher Assistant at school by day and earned her teaching license outside of school hours. Her classroom is a creative and curious space where students are excited to learn and parents feel welcome. You go, Ms. Cameron!

Wake PTA Stars: Jen Schrage

Jen Schrage was recognized in April at the Wake PTA Council Night of Stars event. As the parent of three children, including two Joyner graduates and one current student, Jen has been making Joyner a better place for at least a decade. In addition to running the annual Night of Nonsense/Food Truck Frenzy since 2008, she took the lead on Science Olympiad this year to ensure the program would continue at Joyner. Thank you, Jen!

George Risinger Award for Outstanding Service: Arinn Widmayer

Named for the Joyner principal from 1989 to 1996, this award is presented annually to a “graduating” parent at Joyner who exemplifies outstanding leadership, friendship, encouragement, service and dedication. Arinn has served as a volunteer at Joyner in many capacities over the past eight years, but her leadership for the Teacher Mini-Grants Program and the Spring Fundraiser/Joyner 5K have been particularly significant to the PTA. Most importantly, she embodies the sense of family that makes Joyner such a welcoming place. Thank you, Arinn — we will miss you!

Wake County Public Schools Budget Update and Opportunity for Parent Input

Wake County Public School’s 2018-2019 proposed budget called for an increase of $58.9 million in local funding, $48 million of which would maintain the current level of instruction and support.

The proposal also includes $11 million in improved services, including to increase the number of school counselors, social workers and psychologists as well as services for the Academically and Intellectually Gifted. Visit www.wcpss.net/budget to learn more.

The Board of Education held a public hearing on the budget proposal last week, so parents wishing to comment on the budget should contact their school board member as soon as possible. Once the Board of Education approves changes to the proposed budget, it will send its request to the Wake County Commissioners before May 15. State law requires County Commissioners make the final decision by June 30 on all budget requests involving local funding. More than a quarter of the school system’s budget is paid for with local funding.
